Vintage
baskets are a wonderful way to connect to earlier times. Baskets of all
shapes and sizes were used daily for gathering vegetables, flowers,
eggs, and other items. Baskets were used to carry items to and from the
market and were handy for a variety of chores from doing laundry to
harvesting crops and feeding animals. Vintage baskets can be charming,
decorative, and useful. The wide variety of basket textures, colors,
sizes, shapes, and decorations keeps basket collecting
interesting.
Many baskets are quite sturdy, but some vintage baskets can
be delicate. Baskets should not be allowed to get wet, but if a basket
is periodically exposed to humid air, it will absorb the moisture it
needs. Keeping a basket in direct sunlight will dry the basket out and
make it more fragile. The rims and handles of antique baskets should be
handled carefully. When first picking up an antique basket, use both
hands, one on each side of the basket, and handle it gently. With care,
baskets can last a very long time, and will add charm and warmth to
your home. |
