Some
Frankoma products can be dated by the color of the unglazed
clay. Light tan is Ada
clay, pre-1955. Brick red is Sapulpa clay from 1955 and later. The
color of the clay coming from the Sapulpa deposit changed over time as
the clay deposit was used up, so in general, darker red clay is older
than lighter red clay. Here
is a good tip found
on the Frankoma
Family Collectors Association website: If you're not
sure if the unglazed clay (like the unglazed bottom rim of a dinner
plate) is
Ada Clay or Sapulpa, wet your finger and touch it to the unglazed clay.
If the clay does not change color, it is probably Ada Clay. If the clay
appears darker when wet, it is probably Sapulpa clay.
